Igniting a passion for science is a central element of the STEAM initiative. The new Arkansas K-4 Science Standards were implemented in the 2016-2017 school year. The new standards are based on the latest research on science education and are challenging teachers to make important shifts in teaching practices. Students are challenged as well. We feel strongly that science should be less about memorizing facts and formulas and instead, focusing on fostering the practices and skills that are essential to career scientists. In addition, the new standards integrate engineering, too. The Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum was selected for its focus on integrating science content within engineering focused learning. Sequoyah Elementary is currently in it's second year of PLTW implementation. Students receive hands-on engaging science instruction in the classroom, and in science lab weekly. Computer Science is another area of emphasis. Through innovative approaches, students explore beginner computer programming skills. The goal of our science instruction is for students to develop the scientific literacy and skills required for the 21st century.
